Get clear on the fear that keeps you in a miserable job

Get clear on the fear that keeps you in a miserable jobGet clear on the fear that keeps you in a miserable jobWhen Alexa woke zu sich up at 600 am on Monday morning, Lysa Hirshan told her twice to SNOOZE. The kbedrngnis in Lysas stomach tightened as she envisioned heading to the office for yet another day in corporate agony. Ten minutes later she sighed, swung her legs over the edge of the bed, and willed herself to get moving.Sound familiar? Many American workers stay in jobs they hate. According to a recent national survey by The Conference Board, only 50.8% of workers are satisfied with their jobs.Why do we do this to urselves? We become paralyzed, afraid to leave, similar to staying stuck in a love relationship we know has run its course.However, in the same way we learn through experience that a relationship breakup can actually become a breakthrough, moving to a new position you genuinely enjoy can be a self-care gift to yourself.We spend such a significant amount of our lives at work lets get clear on the fear that holds you back from getting a new job or making a career change.Step 1 Define what keeps you from a switchIs itFear of a pay cut?Fear of the time needed to re-school or recertify or start at entry level?Potential embarrassment about your career dreams or what others will say?Lack of information about how to make the switch?Not knowing what you really want to do?Feeling you have too much invested in your current career choice?Worry that although this job is terrible, leaving might lead to something worse?Low self-esteem or fear of failure?Step 2 Time to embrace a mindset of choice.You are never trapped in a job you choose to stay in it. You can leave, even though there will be consequences. Acknowledging ramifications and developing plans to mitigate adverse results will empower you and reduce stress when you confront them head-on. Is it time to make a choice to move on?Step 3 Calibrate your expectations and allow enough timeHow long? Enough so you can break down the task into small steps spread over months. Consider the often-used analogy of trying to eat an elephant in one sitting. Sounds daunting However, isnt it a more manageable chore if you took many little bites over a year? Making a significant career shift all at once might also seem impossible. Breaking any change into smaller tasks allows you to celebrate small wins, which creates momentum. This momentum, once started, becomes the secret sauce of your successLook to the long-term future setting a goal to be in a new field in 1 to 3 years is not unrealistic. You can hop-scotch your way there through options like taking a similar job to your current one in the industry you want to be in, or by finding volunteer opportunities to develop new skills, contacts and success stories. If your workplace is toxic, consider a bridge job while you retrain, reboot, and re-energize.Can you articulate your fear? Name it, and claim it Im listening, as are all your fellow Bosses. Give us a shout out if this resonates with you.In my next blog post, well prescribe some easy steps you can take this year to start moving toward a job you will love.This article first appeared on Bossed Up.

Find the Perfect Match for Your Career

Find the Perfect Match for Your Career Find the Perfect Match for Your Career If you’re looking for a job match ‘made in heaven,’ first investigate company culture.    In dating and in the job search, it’s all about finding that perfect match. You’re looking for a partner who not only shares your values, but also brings out the best in you.It should be no surprise then, that cultural fit is a key factor in successful candidate placement. Recruiters often refer to an ‘80/20 rule’ of talent acquisition, meaning that only a fifth of their time is dedicated to evaluating a candidate’s skills, while the majority is spent determining if the candidate is the right fit for the team.You could have the best skill set in the world, but if you don’t mesh well with the organization, then you won’t be successful. That’s why it’s so important to learn as much as you can about a company’s culture before you set  foot in the interview room. Use these five tips to find a company that you’ll love.Do a little soul-searchingIn order to evaluate an orga nization, you first have to decide what’s most important to you. In other words, what are you looking for? Consider the opportunities throughout your career where you’ve thrived â€" how would you describe those companies’ core values? Was the environment entrepreneurial and fast-paced, or slower but controlled? Was the company large or small, privately-owned, or public? Identify what company culture works best for you and incorporate this information into your job goals.Get some help onlineThe online dating industry has become $2 billion market in the US alone â€" and with good reason. A Match.com research study found that 1 in 6 married couples now meet online. Job seekers can also take advantage of the web to find the right job match. A quick online search will lead you to lists of companies known for certain qualities such as innovation or work-life balance. Readily check these companies’ websites for open opportunities, and use these parameters to set up saved searches o n sites like Ladders.Ask for your friends’ opinionsHow many couples that you know met each other through a mutual friend? While many people are using technology to find one another, there’s still a large percentage who meet through an introduction. The same applies to the job search. It’s no coincidence that you are ten times more likely to land a job when your application is coupled with an employee referral. Always check your network to see if you know someone before you apply. Your connection can provide you with insight into the company culture and hiring process to (a) make sure it’s a good fit for you and, (b) better prepare you for interviews.Cyber stalk before you meetWhile it might be creepy to check out your date’s Facebook profile before you meet, it’s imperative to research a company online before an interview. Visit Glassdoor and Vault to read employee reviews on an organization. Start following the company’s  social media accounts  â€" these often give yo u great insight into the company’s culture and will help you develop questions for the interview process.Talk…and listen on the first dateWhen you’re on a first date, it’s important that you listen just as much as you talk. The same can be said about interviewing. Ask thoughtful questions that will help you better understand the company. Find out how the interviewer would describe the culture, what kinds of people are most successful in the organization, and why. This will help you determine if the company is right for you, and show the interviewer that you’re interested in the role and have done your homework.Carefully consider a company’s culture before accepting an opportunity to ensure this relationship stands the test of time.

5 Habits to Help You Feel More in Control of Your Life (Which Is a Great Feeling)

5 Habits to Help You Feel More in Control of Your Life (Which Is a Great Feeling) 5 Habits to Help You Feel More in Control of Your Life (Which Is a Great Feeling) Too many of us live our lives based on what we think we’re supposed to do or should be doing. Without realizing it, we’ve let others’ beliefs become our own. That’s fine when those thoughts leverage our strengths and passions and move us toward our dreams. But all too often, these internalized assumptions lead us in the wrong direction and cause us to make choices that are inconsistent with who we are and what we want. So, we take the job that fills the wallet but not the heart. We overcommit and are plagued with guilt and resentment. We give and give and never get back what we want. And we wonder how we got here and what to do about it. While writing my book, The Should Syndrome: Break Free and Start Living the Life You Want, I came up with strategies to help people take charge of their lives and stop letting their “shoulds” dictate their choices. Here are some ideas to help you let go of your own setbacks: 1. Yes Also Means No Wishful thinking aside, we have a limited amount of time and energy. When we say yes to one thing, we are saying no to something else. So, before you agree to take on that high-profile project at work, consider what you are saying no to- is it time with your family, sleep, volunteering, or just time to relax? The benefits may be worth the sacrifice, but understand the trade-offs before you decide. 2. Remember That It’s Almost Never About You All too often we get caught up in self-doubt and assume that people’s reactions are a reflection on us: “She didn’t call me back, I must have offended her.” “No one responded to my suggestion at that meeting, I must not know what I’m talking about.” Most of the time, it’s about them, not us. They are distracted or busy or having a bad day. If you really need to know, then ask, “Is everything okay? I was worried when you didn’t call me back.” If you learn that it really was about you, then correct the situation. But most often, you’ll find that it was about something else entirely. 3. Take Time to Reflect It’s easy to get caught up in the swirl of our everyday lives. Taking time out of the daily routine can bring new perspectives. Reflect back on the day, the month, or the year and give yourself kudos for your accomplishments. Think about your unique talents and capabilities: Have you been using them? Then, reflect on the future: What do you want to accomplish? How do you want to spend your time and energy? As you gain clarity on who you are and what you want, you’ll start making choices that move you in the direction that is right for you. 4. Pay Attention Sometimes we don’t know what we want. One way to figure it out is to pay attention to how different experiences make you feel. Does this new assignment excite you, petrify you, or both? Did that conversation with your boss make you angry, or motivated? Do you feel guilty about not spending more time with your family? Each situation and interaction is an opportunity to learn about you. Which activities energize you? What makes you feel afraid, or happy, or angry? If you have trouble deciphering your feelings, then pay attention to your body. Our physical reactions are a window into our emotions. Closed posture, high-pitched voice, churning stomach, tears- these are signs of anger, resentment, and fear. Smiling, laughing, a spring in your step- these are signs of joy, contentment, and enthusiasm. Start paying attention to your feelings and see what they tell you about who you are and what you want. 5. Learn to Trust Yourself We often hesitate because we’re afraid we’ll make the wrong choice, or we worry about things that might happen. Should I take that new position? What if I fail? What if I get pregnant and want to take time off? Should I stay in this relationship? What if it doesn’t work out? We never have all of the answers- life is full of unexpected events. The key to living the life you want is to make the best decision you can based on the information you have at the time- and then to trust yourself. Trust that you will find a way to be successful. Trust that you will be able to handle whatever happens. Remember, very few decisions can’t be undone. It’s in your control. So, make the choice that works best for you, and trust that it will be okay. Forget Charisma  You Need to Master Your #8216;Microskills#8217;

Forget Charisma â€"  You Need to Master Your #8216;Microskills#8217; Forget Charisma â€"  You Need to Master Your #8216;Microskills#8217; When we picture leaders â€" the real movers and shakers of the world, whether they be political figures, lauded innovators, or even a great teacher you had in school â€" we tend to think of them as larger-than-life personages  whose charisma and sheer brilliance allowed them to make massive strides in their fields. But according to Samuel Bacharach, cofounder and director of program development at the SoHo-based leadership consultancy Bacharach Leadership Group (BLG), thats all bunk. You can have  all the talent in the world, all the charisma, whatever â€" it wont do you any good if you cant actually move your  agenda forward, Bacharach says. All the good ideas you have â€" unless you have some of the fundamental micropolitical competencies you need to move the agenda, it doesnt matter. Bacharachs not just preaching to the next Steve Jobs or  Martin Luther King, Jr., of the world. No matter who you are or what you do, you have an agenda to move if you want to be successful. Job seekers need jobs â€" thats an agenda. Recruiters need talent â€"  yes, thats an agenda. No one is exempt from Bacharachs mandate to learn micropolitical competencies â€" or microskills, as they are called in BLGs new book, The Agenda Mover: When Your Good Idea Is Not Enough. As the title suggests, The Agenda Mover  is an in-depth look at how to turn an idea into reality by taking a series of specific  actions to mobilize support, get buy-in, and sustain the agendas success. These actions are not grounded in charisma or other such near-supernatural inherent traits. Rather, these are small skills that anyone can learn how to do. As Bacharach puts it, [The book] tells you how to get stuff done in spite of who you are, not because of who you are. The Charisma Problem While pop culture tends to celebrate charismatic individuals, Bacharach finds charisma to be a discriminatory and limiting notion, one that forecloses success for the vast majority of people. You cant simply rely on your charm. If you rely on your charm, most of us will not be allowed to play, Bacharach says. Most of us are not going to be given a chance. Well be dismissed because of how we look, how we speak. The whole idea of charisma - it means a lot of people are being excluded from the game. In part, thats because our beliefs about  what it means to be charismatic are largely shaped  by media portrayals, which  suggest that only people who lay claim to a  very narrow set of characteristics are charismatic. Our notion of charismatic is very much dictated by what we see in the movies, Bacharach says. [It's dictated by] who gives the grandiose speech, how people dress, how they come off, who is cool, and who is not cool. Furthermore, our cultural focus on charisma means we often fail to  accurately assess how revered leaders actually arrived at their major successes. For example, Steve Jobs is regularly  portrayed as a visionary genius, but thats hardly the full story of his ascent. As  The Agenda Mover points out, Jobs was successful because he was proactive and pragmatic in pushing his ideas. His charisma shaped who he was but was not essential to his program. Bacharach also says that charisma is problematic because it is very gender-specific. We tend to only think of male figures as being charismatic. If you ask your readers to name five charismatic people, theyre probably going to name four or five males â€" and theyre going to name people who arent anything like most of us, Bacharach says. Eager to disabuse us of our cultural notions regarding the centrality of charisma, Bacharach says the time has come to say to people that leadership is about the capacity to get something done - and getting something done can be done by people who have no charisma. They just need the capacity to build on their ideas and move their agendas. To Move Your Agenda, Become Politically Competent According to Bacharach,  one can acquire the capacity to move their agenda by learning how to be politically competent, and political competence is about acquiring certain microskills that aid in pursuing an agenda. In contrast to core skills â€" the raw technical skills that many of us acquire through training, education, and job experience â€" microskills are more oriented toward engaging with people in productive ways. The Agenda Mover  covers an array of specific actions and techniques one should adopt in moving their agenda forward, but microskills in general largely  fall  into four major  categories: Anticipating the agendas of others Mobilizing your campaign Negotiating support Sustaining your campaign These microskills are not as difficult to acquire as they may seem. For example, anticipating the agendas of others may sound like a daunting task â€" how can you possibly anticipate all possible objections to your own agenda? â€" but Bacharach argues that, in fact, there are a limited number of ways in which people can challenge you. Were so obsessed by our own ideas, but we should really be anticipating what someone else is going to say, Bacharach explains. There are minimal things people can challenge you on. Its about doing your homework on those things. From anticipation to sustaining, the microskills one needs to be politically competent are all things we can methodically do, Bacharach says.  â€" I used to think everyone knew all this, Bacharach says. I used to think, Oh my God â€" this is stuff I learned on a playground in Brooklyn. But through his years of working with organizations, students, universities, and individual professionals, Bacharach has realized that isnt the case. I think we spend an awful lot of time giving people raw abilities and core skills, but we dont spend  enough time giving them these microskills, he says. In todays business world, where solid hierarchies have been supplanted by team- and project-based work, the ability to move an agenda has become more critical than ever for all of us, no matter our industry or station in life. Its not enough to simply have concrete ideas, Bacharach says. The people who achieve are the ones who have raw abilities and raw knowledge, but also have this talent to really move agendas. You have to know how to really pitch your ideas and anticipate what people have to say. Otherwise, we leave it all to the charismatic ones, and the rest of us are excluded.

Broodmare Manager Career Profile

Broodmare Manager Career Profile Broodmare Manager Career Profile The broodmare manager position is an important one in the equine breeding industry. Significant experience is usually a prerequisite for this position, but there are numerous opportunities across the country for the serious job seeker. Duties Broodmare managers are equine professionals with experience in managing the needs of mares and foals. They work the majority of their day on the go, traveling from the farm office to the various barns on the property. The typical routine for a broodmare manager includes teasing mares, assisting with veterinary exams, attending foalings and being on call for emergencies, maintaining herd health records, and managing staff members. It is important to note that while the Thoroughbred industry only allows live cover breeding, broodmare managers working with other breeds may need to develop proficiency with techniques such as artificial insemination, semen collection, and embryo transfer. Career Options Broodmare managers can work with a number of breeds in many areas of the equine industry. Many broodmare managers work in the Thoroughbred industry, with the greatest concentration of breeding farms located in Lexington, Kentucky and Ocala, Florida. A large number of broodmare managers also work with show and performance horse breeds. Broodmare managers can transition from working with one breed to another with ease. They may also transition into other roles in the equine industry that are not necessarily connected with the breeding side of the industry  (such as veterinary pharmaceutical sales, equine product sales, feed sales, training, other management roles, etc.hands-on   equine). Education and Training A college degree is not a requirement for securing a broodmare manager position, though a degree  does lend strength to the applicant’s resume. Useful education would include a bachelors or masters degree in fields such as Equine Reproduction, Animal Science, or Equine Science. There are also some certificate programs available, as well as online or distance learning options from organizations such as the University of Guelph. The equine industry places significant emphasis on practical experience. An aspiring broodmare manager generally works their way up from a groom, foaling attendant, veterinary technician, or assistant broodmare manager position. Hands-On equine internship program would also demonstrate a candidates commitment and skill. Salary The salary for this position can vary widely based on previous experience of the manager, the size of the farm, the type of horses bred (racing, showing, or pleasure), and the prevalent ?rate in that particular geographic area. Salarylist.com quotes an average salary of $40,577 per year for a broodmare manager and $26,313 per year  for an assistant broodmare manager. Salaryquest.com indicates salary can vary widely from $35,000 per year  to $70,000 per year on Thoroughbred breeding farms. In addition to salary, there may be many  other job perks for broodmare managers. These perks may include a variety of items such as  free farm housing (or an allowance to defray the cost of housing), use of a farm vehicle, free board for the manager’s horse, bonuses, paid vacation, and health insurance. Career Outlook The equine industry has shown continued strength over the past several decades, with the number of horses kept for sport or recreation climbing steadily. The amount of money spent in the equine industry has also continued to show growth. Since the breeding industry is a relatively large aspect of the equine industry as a whole, there should be many available jobs for those candidates who are willing to gain the necessary experience and technical skill to advance to management positions.

SAR A Smart Method for Answering Job Interview Questions

SAR A Smart Method for Answering Job Interview Questions SAR A Smart Method for Answering Job Interview Questions Hiring managers typically ask job candidates the same set of questions- and they often  hear the same set of boring, generic answers. But as it turns out, theres a simple way of answering job interview questions that can help you  stand out from the competition! Heres a smart method for answering job interview questions: Its called the  Situation, Action, Result (SAR) method. The way this works is that you  answer the job interview question by using a real example of a situation that you were in; the action that you took; and the ultimate result that you got.  This three-point method helps you avoid rambling or giving too brief an answer, and helps you stay on track.  It assists you in offering a  stronger and tighter response. Before your next interview, take some time to prepare SAR answers to some of the more common interview questions, such as: Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years? Why should I hire you over any other job candidate? What are some of your biggest strengths and weaknesses? Why do you want to work for our company? How would your former bosses and colleagues describe you and your work style? Your answer to each of those questions can be framed using the SAR method! Here’s an example of a SAR method answer: Question: “What makes you a great remote employee?” SAR answer: “I’m a very organized person and am proactive about communicating. One time, my boss needed a project completed urgently and assigned me to do it. But upon working on the project, I noticed that there was some missing information in the spreadsheets that was crucial to completing the project on time. I immediately reached out to my boss via email and instant message to let him know about the situation, and he provided me with the missing info. I was then able to complete the project by the EOD deadline, and my boss was very grateful.” For the answer above, you are giving a statement and then following it up with a specific example that contains facts to  support it. It not only gives your interviewer a glimpse into how you work, but you are also painting a picture of how you would be as a potential employee. Using the SAR interview answer method can help provide a prospective employer with critical details that you might unwittingly gloss over in a generic answer. While you don’t have to answer every question with a SAR response, using this method just might boost your chances of getting a job offer! The majority of Americans believe you can get a good job without a college degree

The majority of Americans believe you can get a good job without a college degree The majority of Americans believe you can get a good job without a college degree A recent New America survey asked  1,600 Americans across generations about their beliefs on  higher education and economic mobility.What they found was mix of optimism, surprises, and acknowledgment that reality doesn’t always align with expectations.Degrees are not necessary but they do helpHere’s the big surprise: slightly more than half of Americans - 51%- believed that you don’t need a college degree to get a well-paying job.Members of Generation X, people  ages 38 to 52, were the least likely to believe that you don’t need a degree to get a good job, while people ages 72 and above were the staunchest supporters of success without needing college. This backs up other government data on lower rates of matriculation. The U.S. Census Bureau found that in 2013, only 66% of high school graduates enrolled in college right after graduation.But even though Americans believe success is possible without higher education, they do recognize that degrees open more doors.75% of Ameri cans believed it is easier to be successful with a college degree than without one.There is still a lot of work to be done, however, in getting Americans to believe in the power of higher education for better work.More Americans are disillusioned with the promise of higher education being attainable for all, according to the New America results. They recognize that it’s a promise granted to a select few: about  four in 10 Americans surveyed believe that every American has  a “decent chance of getting into a good college.” And they suspect that the system of higher education doesn’t have their own interests at heart: 58% of Americans believed that overall, colleges, prioritize their long-term interests first instead of those  of their students.Above all, it’s millennials, the group that is the most educated generation according to 2015 Pew Research analysis, that isn’t happy with the status quo of higher education. As the group that’s most likely to have gotten  a bache lor’s degree, they’re witnessing the gap between perception and reality firsthand. While 39% of members of the Silent Generation were overall okay with the current state of higher education, only 13% of millennials believed the same.We’re just speculating, but that skepticism may have something to do with the fact that millennials owe the bulk of student loan debt in America - and that 43% of all the people who have student loans in America are  paying them late or not at all.
